Spring cleaning has a way of showing you everything. The windows get washed inside and out, the curtains come down, and that one pane still looks milky. You clean it again. Nothing changes.
That's because the cloud isn't on the glass. It's inside it. If you've got guests coming for a graduation, a holiday, or a backyard party, this guide explains what's going on, how to fix it without a new window, and how much lead time to give yourself.
Why are my double pane windows cloudy?
Because the seal around the glass unit has failed. A double-pane window is two sheets of glass with a sealed space between them. When that seal breaks down, moist air gets in, condenses, and leaves a haze or water spots on the inside surfaces. It often looks worse on cool mornings and when the sun hits it.
Over time the haze can turn into streaks, spots, or a milky film that stays all day. Once it's between the panes, it's there to stay until the glass unit is replaced.
How do I know if the fog is inside the glass or just on the surface?
Clean both sides of the pane with a fresh cloth. If the haze wipes off from the room side or the outside, it's surface moisture or dirt. If it's still there after you've cleaned both sides, it's between the panes, and the seal has failed.
- Fog that wipes away from inside the room
- Where it is: On the room-side surface
- What fixes it: Wiping it off; it's not a glass problem
- Dirt or film that comes off with cleaner
- Where it is: On the outside surface
- What fixes it: Cleaning
- Haze, spots, or streaks that won't wipe off from either side
- Where it is: Between the panes
- What fixes it: A new double-pane glass unit
- Fog that comes and goes but always returns
- Where it is: Between the panes
- What fixes it: A new double-pane glass unit
- Crack plus fog in the same pane
- Where it is: Damaged glass and seal
- What fixes it: New glass
If you're not sure, send us a photo. That's usually enough for us to tell where the fog is.
How do I get rid of fog inside my windows before guests arrive?
Replace the sealed glass unit. That's the only fix that clears fog between the panes for good. The window frame, sash, trim, and paint all stay, and only the glass is swapped. Send photos early, because some glass has to be ordered and that takes time.
Here's how to work back from the date your guests arrive:
- Check every window now. Clean the cloudy ones on both sides and note which panes stay hazy.
- Send photos. For each window, take one photo of the full window from inside and one close-up of the cloudy area. You don't need to know what type of glass you have.
- Get your price. Photo review is free. If the photos show what we need, we can usually send a price within minutes during business hours.
- Find out if your glass needs ordering. Regular-size clear double-pane glass is usually replaced in one visit, most of the time within 2 hours. Tempered, textured, colored, and Low-E or argon glass is measured first and installed when it arrives, usually 2 to 3 weeks later.
- Book the visit. Same-day or same-week appointments when available. Our mobile glass truck comes to your home, and clean-up is included.
So if guests are coming in a month, now is the time to send photos. If they're coming this weekend and your glass is clear, standard-size glass, ask anyway. We'll tell you what timing is realistic.
Can I fix cloudy windows myself?
Not in a lasting way. The moisture is sealed inside the glass unit, and there's no way to reach it from the room. Cleaning, hair dryers, and sprays won't clear it, because none of them fix the failed seal. Replacing the glass unit is the fix that works.
There's also no harm in waiting a bit if it's just cosmetic. A cloudy pane is mostly a view and appearance problem. But it won't get better on its own, and it often gets worse.
Do I need new windows if my double pane glass is cloudy?
Usually not. If the frame is solid, a new glass unit goes into the window you already have. It looks the same as its neighbors, and nobody has to touch your trim, siding, or paint. You only need a whole new window if the frame itself has failed.
Some windows do need replacing. If the frame is rotted, or cracked or warped too badly to hold new glass, new glass won't sit right, and we'll tell you that before you spend anything. We don't sell full windows, so we have no reason to push one. For more detail, see our guide to foggy window repair.
How much does it cost to fix cloudy double pane windows?
Every job is priced individually, based on the size and type of glass. We don't publish price ranges, because a range would mislead: the price depends on your exact glass and window. In our experience, a glass repair usually costs about a third of a medium-quality full window replacement, and about a fifth of a high-end one. Replacing the glass unit is a smaller job than replacing the whole window, since your frame, trim, and paint stay. Send two photos and we can usually send your exact price within minutes during business hours.
If you want to understand what goes into the price first, our window glass replacement cost guide breaks it down. The short version: you get a fair price for the right repair, and you see it before you book.
What else should I fix before guests come over?
Look at the rooms your guests will actually use. A guest room window that won't stay up, a cracked bathroom pane, or a patio door with fog in the glass gets noticed. So do torn screens once it's warm enough to open the windows. Most of these can be fixed in the same visit as your cloudy glass.
A quick guest-ready list:
- Guest room: does the window open, stay up, and lock?
- Bathroom: any cracks in the glass, including textured or privacy glass? (Textured glass has to be ordered, so allow 2 to 3 weeks.)
- Living room and patio door: any fog or cracks in the big panes people look through?
- Screens: any tears or holes before you open up the house for the season?
Send photos of everything in one message and we'll price it all together. If something on the list can't wait for ordered glass, tell us the date and we'll tell you what's realistic.
Is the new glass covered if it gets cloudy again?
Yes. Double-pane glass we install comes with our Lifetime Seal Warranty. If the seal fails and fog or moisture shows up between the panes, covered labor and materials cost you nothing. The warranty stays no matter who owns the property, as long as the glass is still in the same window, the sash is still in the same frame, and nothing has been altered. It doesn't cover impact or misuse damage. Details are at https://2hourglass.com/warranty.
If you're a past customer and a window we worked on has gone cloudy, send us a photo. Our post on your window repair warranty explains what's covered and when to call.
