You clean the window inside. You clean it outside. The haze is still there, right in the middle of the glass, where no cloth can reach. Some days it looks like a light film. On cold mornings you might see droplets.
That isn't dirt, and it isn't something you're doing wrong. It's one of the most common window problems we see, and it rarely means you need new windows. Here's what causes it, how to tell it apart from normal condensation, and what the fix involves.
Why is there fog between my window panes?
Fog between the panes means the seal on your double-pane glass has failed. A double-pane unit is two sheets of glass sealed together around the edges with a gap in the middle. When that seal wears out, moist air gets into the gap, and the moisture fogs or streaks the glass from the inside.
A few things worth knowing:
- It's sealed in, so you can't clean it out. The moisture sits between two sheets of glass, so cleaners, vinegar, and squeegees won't touch it.
- It won't fix itself. When a seal is just starting to fail, the fog can clear between seasons. It comes back in cold or rainy weather, when it's warm inside and cold outside, then clears again in hot weather. Over time it stays longer and gets worse, and streaks stay on the glass even when it dries.
- It can happen to any double-pane window. Older windows, newer windows, wood, vinyl, and aluminum frames all use sealed glass that can fail over time.
The seal is part of the glass unit, not part of the frame. Replace the glass unit and you replace the seal along with it.
How can I tell if the fog is inside the glass or on the surface?
Wipe both sides of the glass. If the haze is gone after you clean the inside or the outside, it was surface condensation and there's nothing to repair. If it's still there after cleaning both sides, the fog is between the panes and the seal has failed.
Use this list to sort out what you're seeing:
- Fog that wipes off from inside the room
- Likely cause: Indoor condensation on the surface
- Repairable without a new window?: Nothing to repair
- Fog that wipes off from outside
- Likely cause: Outdoor dew or condensation on the surface
- Repairable without a new window?: Nothing to repair
- Haze, streaks, or droplets that won't wipe off from either side
- Likely cause: Failed seal, moisture between the panes
- Repairable without a new window?: Usually yes: a new double-pane glass unit
- Fog between the panes plus a crack in the glass
- Likely cause: Damaged glass unit
- Repairable without a new window?: Usually yes: a new double-pane glass unit
- Fog plus a soft or rotted frame
- Likely cause: Seal failure and a failed frame
- Repairable without a new window?: Maybe not: the frame may need a new window
If you only have single-pane glass (one sheet), fog on it is surface condensation, not a failed seal.
Can foggy double pane windows be fixed without replacing?
Yes, in most cases. The fix is a new double-pane glass unit set into your existing window. As long as the frame and sash are in good shape, nothing else has to come out. Your window stays in the wall, and it keeps looking like the other windows in your house.
Here's what that means in practice:
- Your trim, siding, and paint stay as they are. There's no opening to rebuild.
- You pay for the part that failed. The frame still works, so you keep it.
- One foggy window is one job. You don't have to replace a set of windows to fix one.
We aim to match your existing glass, and the exact match is confirmed for each job before any work starts. That's what foggy window repair really is: new glass where the old glass failed, at a fair price for the right repair.

What won't foggy window repair fix?
Replacing foggy glass fixes the fog and gives you a clear view again. It isn't a fix for drafts around the window, and we don't do weatherstripping or draft work. It also can't save a frame that has rotted. If your photos show a frame problem, we'll tell you so.
So we don't promise lower energy bills or a draft-free room. What new glass does do is clear the fog, and the double-pane glass we install carries our Lifetime Seal Warranty.
When does a foggy window actually need to be replaced?
Most foggy windows don't, but some do. If the wood around the glass has rotted, new glass won't sit securely in it, and a full window replacement is the right call. A cracked or bent frame is less clear cut, and many still take new glass safely.
Signs that point toward a full replacement, and the ones that depend:
- The wood is soft or crumbles when you press on it. Rotted wood can't hold new glass securely, so this one points to a new window.
- The frame or sash is cracked or split. This one depends. Minor cracks often still hold new glass safely, while bigger damage may not. Send photos of exactly where it's damaged and we'll tell you which it is.
- The frame is bent or warped. Same thing: it's situational, and sometimes we can make it work. Photos let us check before you decide anything.
- You want a different size, style, or type of window. That's a remodel, not a repair.
A window that won't open, close, lock, or stay up is a different story. That's usually worn hardware, and most of the time it's fixable. It isn't a reason to buy a new window. Our guide to a window that won't stay up explains the usual fixes.
We don't sell or install full windows. If replacement is the right answer, we'll say so, and you can take that to a window company. Not every window can be saved, but most foggy ones can.
How does foggy window repair work?
You send photos, we send a price, and we come to you to replace the glass. You don't need to measure anything or know what kind of glass you have. Regular-size clear double-pane glass is usually replaced in one visit, most of the time within 2 hours.
- Send two photos. One of the full window from inside, and one close-up of the fog. Try to catch the haze in daylight so it shows up clearly.
- Get your price. Photo review is free. If the photos show what we need, we can usually send a price within minutes during business hours.
- Pick a time. Same-day or same-week appointments when available.
- We come to you. Our mobile glass truck parks at your home or business, and the work happens on site.
- We clean up. Removing the old glass, disposal, and clean-up are included.
One trade-off: wood windows with a special paint finish may need a little touch-up after the new glass goes in.
How long does foggy window repair take?
For a regular-size clear double-pane unit, it's usually one visit, most of the time within 2 hours. Low-E, argon, tempered, textured, or colored glass has to be ordered, so we measure first and come back to install, usually 2 to 3 weeks later.
Two terms you may see on a quote:
- Low-E glass has a thin, invisible coating that reflects heat.
- Argon is a gas sealed between the panes of some double-pane units.
You don't need to know which one you have. The photos usually tell us, and if they don't, we'll ask.
Is the new glass covered by a warranty?
Yes. Double-pane glass we install comes with our Lifetime Seal Warranty. If the seal fails and fog or moisture shows up between the panes again, covered labor and materials cost you nothing. The warranty stays no matter who owns the property, as long as the glass is still in the same window, the sash is still in the same frame, and nothing has been altered. It doesn't cover impact or misuse damage. Details are at https://2hourglass.com/warranty.
What customers say
"Do great work. Really easy process. The window manufacturer on my windows went out of business. So my lifetime warranty ended. The seals on three windows leaked, causing cloudy windows. Search for alternatives, 2 hour glass were perfect alternative to buying three new windows. Company’s very professional and showed up on time. Very happy with the service. Highly recommended them."

Frequently asked questions
How much does foggy window repair cost?
Every job is priced individually, based on the size and type of glass. We don't publish price ranges, because a range would mislead: the price depends on your exact glass and window. In our experience, a glass repair usually costs about a third of a medium-quality full window replacement, and about a fifth of a high-end one. Send two photos and we can usually send your exact price within minutes during business hours. For more on what affects the price, see our guide to window glass replacement cost.
Can I fix condensation between window panes myself?
Not in a way that lasts. The moisture is sealed between the two panes, so the fix is a new sealed glass unit.
Is foggy window repair cheaper than a new window?
It's a smaller job, since you keep the frame, trim, and paint you already have, so it usually costs less than a full replacement. Your photo quote shows the actual number before you book.
How long does it take to fix a fogged double pane window?
Regular-size clear double-pane glass is usually replaced in one visit, most of the time within 2 hours. Low-E, argon, tempered, textured, and colored glass is measured first and installed when it arrives, usually 2 to 3 weeks later.
Will the fog come back?
The new double-pane glass we install is covered by our Lifetime Seal Warranty. If the seal fails and fog shows up between the panes, covered labor and materials cost you nothing.
Does foggy glass mean I need all new windows?
No. A failed seal is a glass problem, not a frame problem. Unless the frame itself is rotted or badly broken, replacing the glass unit is usually enough.
What photos should I send?
Send one photo of the full window taken from inside and one close-up of the fog. Daylight photos show the haze best.
