How Much to Replace a Window Pane?

The short answer

Quick answer: How much to replace a window pane depends on the glass: its size, whether it's single or double-pane, and whether it's clear, tempered, or coated. Every job is priced individually, so the real answer comes from your photos. We don't publish a price range, because it would mislead. What we can share is a comparison: in our experience, a glass repair usually costs about a third of a medium-quality full window replacement, and about a fifth of a high-end one. Send a shot of the full window plus a close-up, and we can usually reply with a price within minutes during business hours.

You know what's wrong. There's a crack running across the glass, or a hole from a ball, or fog between the panes that won't wipe off. What you don't know is the number. And not knowing can feel worse than the repair itself, because it keeps the job sitting on the list.

You can get that number quickly, without taking a morning off for an estimate appointment and without a sales pitch. Here's what affects the price of a window pane, how the photo quote works, and what's included once you book.

How much does it cost to fix a broken window pane?

It depends on the glass and the job, which is why we price every window pane on its own instead of guessing from a chart. A range would mislead, since two panes that look alike can be very different jobs. The quickest way to get your actual price is to send two photos. Photo review is free.

Two windows that look alike from the street can be very different jobs. One might be a small clear single pane. The other might be a large double-pane unit with a Low-E coating that has to be ordered. A price quoted over the phone without seeing either one is a guess, and guesses tend to change once someone shows up.

So we skip the guessing. You send photos, we look at what you actually have, and we send a price for that window. Our aim is simple: a fair price for the right repair, which is often the smaller job.

What changes the price of a window pane?

The glass itself drives most of the price. Size, single or double-pane, and the type of glass matter most, followed by where the glass sits (window, door, or storefront). Here's what we look for in your photos and why each one matters:

  • Single or double-pane
    • Why it matters: A double-pane unit is two sheets of glass sealed together, so it's a different part than a single pane
    • Can the photo show it?: Usually yes
  • Size of the glass
    • Why it matters: Bigger glass is more material and handling
    • Can the photo show it?: Roughly; the exact size is confirmed on site
  • Clear, tempered, textured, colored, or Low-E/argon
    • Why it matters: Special glass has to be ordered, which changes the price and the timing
    • Can the photo show it?: Often; we'll ask if it isn't clear
  • Where it is
    • Why it matters: A window, a door, a sliding patio door, or a storefront are different jobs
    • Can the photo show it?: Yes
  • What's wrong
    • Why it matters: A crack, a full break, or fog between the panes
    • Can the photo show it?: Yes
  • Anything else going on
    • Why it matters: If the window also won't stay up or lock, the hardware can be priced at the same time
    • Can the photo show it?: Yes, if you mention it

A few terms in plain English:

  • Double-pane glass is two sheets of glass with a sealed gap between them, made as one unit.
  • Tempered glass is safety glass that breaks into small pieces instead of sharp shards. It always has to be ordered, even when it's clear.
  • Low-E glass has a thin, invisible coating that reflects heat. Argon is a gas sealed between the panes of some double-pane units.

You don't need to know any of this before you send photos. It's our job to figure it out.

How does the photo quote work?

You send pictures, we send a price, and you pick a time. No sales presentation and no estimate visit. If the photos show what we need, we can usually send the price within minutes during business hours.

  1. Take two photos. One of the full window taken from inside, and one close-up of the crack, break, or fog.
  2. Send them. Use the form at https://2hourglass.com/start-service, or text them to (267) 458-7879.
  3. Get your price. Photo review is free. During business hours (Monday to Friday 9 AM to 6 PM, Saturday 9 AM to 2 PM ET), we can usually reply within minutes.
  4. Pick a time. Same-day or same-week appointments when available.
  5. We fix it at your place. Our mobile glass truck comes to your home or business. Regular-size clear single or double-pane glass is usually replaced in one visit, most of the time within 2 hours.

If something in the photos isn't clear, we'll ask for one more shot rather than guess. And if your glass has to be ordered, we'll tell you that with the price, so the 2 to 3 week wait isn't a surprise later.

What photos should I send to get a window pane price?

Send one photo of the whole window from inside and one close-up of the damage. That's usually all it takes. A few small things make the photos more useful and help us get the price right the first time.

  • Stand back for the first photo. Get the whole window in the frame, including the sash and trim, so we can see the type of window.
  • Get close for the second. Show the crack, the hole, or the fog clearly.
  • Shoot from inside. Inside photos tend to show the frame and glass better.
  • Turn on a light or open the blinds. Dark photos hide details.
  • Mention anything else. If the window also sticks, won't lock, or won't stay up, say so in your message.
  • More than one window? Send a full photo and a close-up for each one, and say which is which.

If you're not sure what to photograph, call or text and we'll walk you through it. Want to know how the photos turn into an appointment time? Our same day window glass repair guide covers scheduling.

What's included in the price?

Removal of the old glass, disposal, and clean-up are included. You don't pay extra for us to haul the broken pane away. The price you get is for the repair your photos show, and if something on site changes the job, we'll explain it before doing more.

A few more things that come with the work:

  • Lifetime Seal Warranty on double-pane glass we install. It covers seal failure and fog or moisture between the panes, and covered labor and materials cost nothing. The warranty stays no matter who owns the property, as long as the glass is still in the same window, the sash is still in the same frame, and nothing has been altered. It doesn't cover impact or misuse damage. Details are at https://2hourglass.com/warranty.
  • Hardware promise. If we can't repair a hardware problem, we don't charge for that repair or the attempt.
  • One note. Wood windows with a special paint finish may need a little touch-up after the new glass goes in.

Is replacing the pane cheaper than replacing the whole window?

It's the smaller job, since you keep the frame, trim, and paint you already have, so it usually costs less than a full window replacement. The photo quote shows you the actual number before you book anything.

That said, some windows do need replacing. If the frame is rotted, split, or warped so badly that new glass won't sit right, a new pane would be money spent on the wrong fix. We don't sell or install full windows, so if replacement is the right answer, we'll tell you and you can take that to a window company. Usually not, if the frame is in good shape. When a window does need replacement, we'll tell you.

What photos should I send?

Send one photo of the full window taken from inside and one close-up of the crack, break, or fog. That's usually all we need to give you a price.
